The Valley of Death

These were not taken from the center of the valley, but from the woods line opposite Round Top, to the left of Devil's Den. Here is the front slope of Little Round Top.

Right to Big Round Top. Devil's Den is to the right. The flanking attack that hit the Chamberlain's 20th Main went through the woods along the side of Big Round Top.

As the object of stone walls is to make plowing cleared land easier, it is not unusual to find cover along the edges of a tree line. The west edge of the Valley of Death is no exception.
